Local Man Named World’s Best Steering Wheel Drummer
A Wad Lake man beat out hundreds of other contestants to take the top prize in the World Steering Wheel Drumming competition, held yesterday at the Knights of Stultus Lodge in downtown Newton’s Crotch.
25-year-old Fitch Stibbler took home a $212 cash prize and a new flat-bottomed steering wheel from a 2018 Skoda Octavia.
Canfield Phart, a contest judge, said Stibber wowed the crowd by drumming a mesmerizing rendition of the Stanton Moore Trio’s “Pie-Eyed Manc” on a 1984 Mercury Lynx steering wheel. “The triple paradiddle on the horn ring really blew us away,” Phart said, shaking his head.
Asked for comment, Stibbler said, “Wow, this is um………..,” before becoming distracted by a large blue-winged horse fly that landed on his knuckle.
“…a real honor,” he continued about a half-hour later.
