We Started the Black Wheel Craze, Claims BMW

Fans of black automotive wheels might want to send BMW a note of thanks.  The Munich-based automaker claims the black-wheeled trend is a direct result of their cars’ propensity for producing an excessive amount of brake dust that thoroughly blankets the wheels with dingy, difficult-to-remove soot.

“People began taking notice and asked us, ‘How can I get that grimy look for my car?’,” said BMW spokesman Bernd Schmiedel. “Of course, we tell them the best way is to buy a BMW.”

But aftermarket wheel manufacturers became interested after thousands of car owners began scorching their own wheels with propane torches or spraying them with black paint in an effort to replicate BMW’s look.  It’s become so popular, says freelance valve stem designer Louie Freesenhut, that black has overtaken chrome as the most popular wheel finish.

BMW’s Schmiedel, however, says he’s not impressed with what he calls “replica black aftermarket wheels.”

“We take pride in producing the blackest, stickiest, highest quality brake dust in the automotive industry.  The only way to get truly grungy wheels is to get a BMW.”
