Researchers Identify VW Emissions Cheating Device

More than one year after news of Volkswagen’s diesel emissions scandal broke, researchers at the University of Formaldehyde have finally discovered exactly how the automaker’s engineers pulled it off.

University researcher Sarah Huckabee Lithenbacher displays Volkswagen’s emissions cheating device

University researcher Sarah Huckabee Lithenbacher explained that the approximately 170-pound steel device redirected the vehicle’s exhaust gases, preventing them from passing through the emissions controls.

“It was right there under the hood all the time,” Lithenbacher said of the contraption.  “It’s hard not to notice it, so I can’t explain why we didn’t discover it earlier.”
