Court Rules Cops Must Wait While Suspects Charge Electric Getaway Vehicles

Police officers wait patiently while fleeing bank robber recharges the battery in a stolen Telsa

Saying they wanted to promote the use of environmentally-friendly vehicles, the state court of appeals today ruled that police officers chasing a suspect who is driving an electric or fuel cell car must halt their pursuit and wait while the violator recharges.

“No criminal would ever drive a green vehicle if the police could just swoop in and arrest him as soon as his battery was depleted,” Judge Minuet Marie Diffencarper said in her ruling. “I think what we need to be trying to do here is encouraging bank robbers, murderers, kidnappers and their ilk to jump on the zero-emission bandwagon,” she continued.

“It’s ridiculous,” countered law enforcement attorney Toby Yeggie. “If the crook is using one of those slow home chargers, the cops will be sitting around waiting at his house all day.”
